What is the difference between a personal fall arrest system and a personal fall restraint system?

It includes a full-body harness, connecting lanyard or self-retracting lifeline (SRL), and an anchorage point rated for fall arrest forces. A personal fall restraint system prevents a worker from reaching a fall hazard in the first place — the lanyard length is set so the worker cannot get close enough to the edge to fall. Restraint systems are simpler and impose lower forces on the structure, but only work when the hazard is a defined edge.

What is a horizontal lifeline system?

A horizontal lifeline (HLL) system is a cable or rigid rail stretched between two anchor points, allowing workers to attach their harness and move continuously along the line without detaching. HLL systems are ideal for work areas where workers need to travel laterally — such as rooftops, mezzanines, and elevated walkways. They must be engineered to account for the dynamic forces generated during a fall, which can be significantly higher than static loads.

What happens if fall protection equipment has been involved in a fall?

Any personal fall arrest equipment that has been subjected to fall arrest forces must be immediately removed from service and inspected by a competent person before being returned to use. In most cases, harnesses, lanyards, and SRLs that have arrested a fall should be destroyed and replaced — the forces involved can cause damage that is not visible to the naked eye. Anchorage points and structural connections must also be inspected and recertified.
